Local News in Brief : Sun Valley Youth Dies in Freeway Accident
A Sun Valley teen-ager was fatally injured when he was thrown from a car after it blew a tire and struck the center divider on the Golden State Freeway in Pacoima, the California Highway Patrol reported Wednesday.
Javier Alvizar, 17, died at Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills about half an hour after the accident at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday near the Paxton Street exit, said Officer Linda Curtis.
Alvizar and his brother, Miguel Alvizar, 24, were passengers in the car being driven by Julian Zuniga, 30, of Los Angeles.
Curtis said the car was traveling south at high speed when a tire blew, sending it out of control. The car struck the center divider and the younger Alvizar was thrown out, suffering a fatal head injury when he hit the pavement, Curtis said.
Miguel Alvizar and Zuniga suffered cuts and chest injuries in the accident and were treated at Holy Cross, she said.
