Global Tribalism
William Pfaff seems to use the word ideology narrowly, limiting it to political doctrine, as in the “war of neo-conservatives with liberals.”
For cultural anthropologists, however, ideology is a system of meaning, construction out of all of an individual’s beliefs and values, however illogical, however contradictory. Yes, ideology may well involve a political credo. But it also comprises tribal loyalties, religious convictions. And pledges of allegiance to talismanic flags.
