GAO Questions Low IRS Pay

In some areas of the country, the people who process your federal tax return are paid less than those who make your hamburgers, congressional auditors said today.

The problem of low salaries was one of several cited by the General Accounting Office in a report on how the IRS might improve the tax-collection process. The report said that while the IRS cannot match the big salaries offered by some private employers, “IRS could improve its competitive position through more modern and sophisticated recruiting.”
