Duffy Daugherty, who set a national community college record for passing yardage this past season for Palomar College, appeared ready to sign with Idaho State of the I-AA Big Sky Conference. Until Monday, that is, when the University of Oregon called. Now Daugherty is waiting to see if the Ducks make an offer.

“(Oregon) indicated they wanted to sign a JC quarterback and they haven’t done so yet,” Palomar Coach Tom Craft said. “They were very interested. Duffy told (Idaho State Wednesday) that he was going to wait. I think Duffy could be very competitive there (Oregon) and I think he feels the same way.”

Four players from area community colleges did sign Wednesday. Charleton Lynch, a defensive back from San Diego Mesa, signed with Texas-El Paso, and teammate Gerald Harris, a wide receiver, will attend Ohio University. Lynch went to Lincoln High School and Harris is from Madison.

Southwestern College defensive back Kevin Morris (Chula Vista) decided on Montana of the Big Sky Conference, and Palomar linebacker Shawn Forristall is going to Cal State Fullerton of the Big West Conference.

Daugherty was name an honorable mention All-American by J.C. Grid-Wire this past season after leading the state in individual offense with 298 yards per game. He completed 233 of 421 passes for 3,006 yards and 22 touchdowns. Daugherty, from Orange Glen High, was also considering Pennsylvania.

Most community college players had made commitments to schools before Wednesday’s signing date.

Grossmont led the local colleges with five players transferring to National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Division I programs. Tailback Victor DeVaughn will attend Fresno State; wide receiver Jeff Exum (Helix), offensive lineman Kid Cantrell and defensive back Chris Comick (Hoover) are heading to Cal State Long Beach, and linebacker Keith Embray (Mt. Miguel) will attend Nevada Las Vegas.

Palomar’s Brian Lasho (Carlsbad), an all-state offensive lineman, is going to Fresno State.

Wide receiver Darrell Hicks, from San Diego Mesa and Kearny, visited Ohio University but has decided to stay in California. Hicks’ brother, Cliff, is with the Los Angeles Rams.
