More than 100 people picketed outside a Costa Mesa restaurant in protest of a dinner honoring the western regional commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Harold W. Ezell was honored by the Bellflower Council of the League of United Latin American Citizens for his work with the amnesty program, which helps illegal aliens become U.S. citizens. Amin David, president of Los Amigos of Orange County and one of the protesters, said the demonstration was to show that not everyone in the Latino community feels Ezell should be honored. The protesters argued that Ezell used “inhumane” tactics to enforce INS regulations and that he was never qualified for the post when he was appointed in 1983.
