Pope John Paul II arrived today, saying he was carrying a message of “prosperity and peace” for the remote nation’s Muslims and spirit worshipers as well as the Roman Catholic minority.

The pontiff’s special Alitalia Boeing 747 jetliner touched down at Ivato International Airport, ending the 4,500-mile first leg of a nine-day trip that will also take him to the French-owned island of Reunion and the southern Africa republics of Zambia and Malawi.
