Gittens, Former Fountain Valley Star, Arrested in Tempe in Marijuana Case
Former Fountain Valley High School football star Willie Gittens has been arrested here after police learned he was wanted in California on suspicion of transporting and possessing marijuana, authorities said Thursday.
Gittens, 29, who played at Arizona State, was arrested Tuesday morning at his apartment in Tempe and booked into Maricopa County Jail in Phoenix. He is being held without bail, police said.
Authorities said Gittens faces charges of being a fugitive from justice and is wanted on warrants issued by the Blythe, Calif., City Court.
Gittens, the CIF’s player of the year in 1977, scored 53 touchdowns and rushed for nearly 2,700 yards at Fountain Valley. He was a running back and kick returner at Arizona State from 1979-82. He rushed for 1,959 yards in 383 carries and scored eight touchdowns for the Sun Devils.
He signed a free-agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys in 1982, but was released in training camp.
