3 Charged Over Racial Slurs on Coach’s Door
Charges of terrorism and vandalism were filed Wednesday against three former football players from St. Genevieve High School in Panorama City who are accused of painting racial slurs on the door of a black coach and causing $10,000 in other damage at the school.
The former players--Jesus Renteria, Paul Zamora and Carlos Gonzalez, all 18-year-old seniors--each face arraignment July 5 in Van Nuys Municipal Court on one charge of felony vandalism and one charge of misdemeanor terrorism.
Two other students, both 17, are also suspected in the June 12 incident.
School authorities found “KKK” and other racial slurs painted on the door of Jimmy Chambers, assistant football coach, as well as smashed drinking fountains, broken glass and other damage.
All five students surrendered to police June 14, Deputy Dist. Atty. Christine A. Sherman said. The three 18-year-olds were each freed on $5,000 bail.
The two juveniles were released to their parents while prosecutors decide whether to file charges in Juvenile Court.
If convicted, the 18-year-olds each face up to three years in state prison.
