Johnson Leads U.S. to 128-75 Win Over Poland

Larry Johnson scored 21 points and strong play by the reserves helped the U.S. basketball team defeat Poland, 128-75, Friday at the World University Games.

Johnson also had 13 rebounds as the United States finished the preliminary round of the 16-team tournament with a 3-0 record. Johnson, the top U.S. scorer, has averaged 23 points.

Travis Mays and Victor Alexander, both coming off the bench, scored 19 and 16 points, respectively.

The United States will play Israel today in the quarterfinals.

Turkey, already eliminated from the quarterfinals, produced the first big upset of the tournament, beating the Soviet Union, 77-76.

Despite the loss, the Soviets, who finished 2-1 in their group, advanced to the quarterfinals.

The track and field events began Friday with the Soviet Union and China winning gold medals. Ken Flax, of Tiburon, Calif., won a bronze for the United States in the hammer throw with a toss of 248-11.

Igor Astapkovich of the Soviet Union won with a meet-record throw of 264-4, and Heinrich Weis of West Germany won the silver at 261-1.

Huang Zhihong of China won the women’s shotput at 67-6. Belsis Laza of Cuba was second at 63-4 3/4, and Zhou Tianhua of China won the bronze medal at 61-4 3/4.
