First ‘Great American Race West’ to Head for Nevada From Queen Mary

The first annual “Great American Race West” will debut at the Queen Mary and Spruce Goose Entertainment Center on Oct. 12.

The center will be the starting line for the race of about 40 antique cars that will finish 1,800 miles away in Sparks, Nev. Cars from California, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington will take part.

Featured in the competition are a 1950 Kurtis sports car, a 1954 British Jaguar and a 1954 Kaiser Darrin. The cars will be divided into two categories: 1936 and earlier and 1937 to 1959. The cars will be on display on Oct. 11 in the Entertainment Center parking lot and will parade in front of the Queen Mary on the day of the event at 10:30 a.m.

A purse of $15,000 will be at stake for each category.
