ROUNDUP : Fountain Valley Defeats Edison in Girls’ Tennis

The Fountain Valley High School girls’ tennis team defeated Edison, 12-6, Tuesday at Edison to move into a first-place tie with the Chargers in the Sunset League.

Renee Urricariet won her singles sets, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, and Nora Kapche won, 7-5, 7-6, 6-2, for the Barons (7-1 in league), the fifth-ranked team in the Southern Section 4-A division. Earlier in the season, Edison (14-3 overall, 7-1 in league), the fourth-ranked team, defeated the Barons at Fountain Valley.

In Empire League girls’ tennis:

Katella 16, Loara 2--Margaret Harker and Janet Jo swept in doubles, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1, to lead host Katella, which won all nine doubles sets.

In Orange League girls’ tennis:

Western 16, Magnolia 2--Tami Galeai won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, and Hollie Diplock won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, in singles for visiting Western (13-1, 8-1).

Valencia 14, Savanna 4--Cyndy Nguyen and Bernie Cuyugen swept, 7-6, 6-1, 6-1, in doubles for visiting Valencia (12-5, 8-1).

In Pacific Coast League girls’ tennis:

Laguna Beach 15, Orange 3--Erinn Johnson won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, and Marlie Orchowski won, 6-0, 6-2, 6-2, in singles for host Laguna Beach (11-4, 6-2).

Laguna Hills 17, Costa Mesa 1--Jenny Marquez won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1; Brook Fleming won, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, and Noriko Hopkins won, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0, in singles for host Laguna Hills (9-6, 8-0).

In Sea View League girls’ tennis:

Estancia 13, Saddleback 5--Host Estancia (12-5, 5-2) swept in singles. Dina Birch won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0; Shelby Straw won, 6-4, 6-3, 6-0, and Shannon Curren won, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1.

Corona del Mar 11, University 7--Jeannette Fylpaa swept in singles, 6-4, 7-6, 6-1, for University (4-3 in league play). First-place Corona del Mar is 7-0 in the league.

In South Coast League girls’ tennis:

Capistrano Valley 15, Mission Viejo 3--Allison Light won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-3, and Farrah Tierney won, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0, for Capistrano Valley (15-0, 7-0) at Mission Viejo.

In Academy League girls’ volleyball:

Newport Christian 3, Heritage 0--Kathy Nichols’ five kills and two aces and Rebecca Rogan’s five kills and one ace helped host Newport Christian win, 15-2, 15-6, 15-5. Newport is 12-1, 6-0.

In Angelus League girls’ volleyball:

Mater Dei 3, Rosary 0--Wendy Herb had 10 kills and 11 blocks but Rosary (25-5, 3-4) lost, 15-12, 15-12, 15-12, at Troy High School.

In Century League girls’ volleyball:

Canyon 3, Villa Park 1--Canyon prevailed, 15-9, 13-15, 15-12, 15-3, at Villa Park.

In Empire League girls’ volleyball:

Esperanza 3, El Dorado 0--Sharman Grant had 11 kills to lead host Esperanza (11-1, 7-0) to a 15-7, 15-2, 15-8 sweep.

In Freeway League girls’ volleyball:

La Habra 3, Sunny Hills 0--The host Highlanders (12-0, 7-0), ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section 3-A, won, 15-4, 15-1, 15-7.

In Olympic League girls’ volleyball:

Capistrano Valley Christian 3, Ontario Christian 0--Amy Sommerville and Karen Benkowski each had seven kills to lead the host Eagles (12-1, 10-1), 15-6, 15-7, 15-5.

In Orange League girls’ volleyball:

Magnolia 3, Western 0--Jill Schneider had 19 kills, seven aces and two blocks to lead visiting Magnolia (9-4, 6-1), 15-10, 15-6, 15-9.

In South Coast League girls’ volleyball:

Irvine 3, San Clemente 2--The Vaqueros (6-5, 4-3) won, 15-12, 13-15, 4-15, 15-11, 15-9, at Irvine.

In Sunset League girls’ volleyball:

Huntington Beach 3, Marina 2--Angie Luzio had 14 kills as the Oilers (2-9, 2-6) won, 15-13, 8-15, 15-6, 13-15, 15-11, at Marina.

In Garden Garden Grove League water polo:

La Quinta 11, Los Amigos 7--Jim Rose had four goals and Brandon Marumoto three as the Aztecs (12-6, 5-1) clinched second place in the league with the victory at Golden West College.

In nonleague water polo:

Fullerton 15, San Clemente 14 (OT)--Mike Jephcott scored with four seconds left in overtime for host Fullerton (12-10). The score was tied, 13-13, at the end of regulation and San Clemente took a 14-13 lead early in overtime. Robbie Hull scored with 1:35 left in overtime to tie it, 14-14. It was his ninth goal of the match.

Edison 16, Costa Mesa 15--Brian Stanton scored nine goals for visiting Edison (10-7). Quint Nichols and Brian Melstrom each added two for Edison. Corey Delahunt had seven goals for Costa Mesa.

Irvine 9, Valencia 4--Greg Shank scored three for the Vaqueros (12-9) at Valencia.
