COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Mission Rallies With Three Runs in Seventh to Overcome Pierce, 6-5

Mission College fell behind by three runs but battled back and eventually pulled ahead with a three-run seventh in a 6-5 nonconference victory over visiting Pierce on Tuesday.

Mission’s Dane Turner singled in the tying run, and Rudy Sanchez singled Turner home with the go-ahead run to make a winner of Nick Lymberopoulos (2-2), who had relieved starter Jose Garcia in the third.

Pierce starter Kurt Lowry left after five innings, holding a 5-2 lead, in order to be ready for a Western State Conference game Saturday against Moorpark.

Mike Shwartzer (0-1) took the loss in relief of Lowry.

John Kukawski hit a solo home run in the third for Mission (8-5). Turner and Rich Ortiz each had two hits.

Pat Huston hit his second home run of the season and a double for Pierce (7-6), which was playing its last game before entering WSC play. Joe Cascione added two doubles.

In other college baseball games:

Cal Lutheran 8, Westmont 7--Manny Alvarez drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th to lead Cal Lutheran in an NAIA District 3 game at home.

Alvarez, who was two for five with a home run, drove in Mike Borzello from third with one out.

Borzello reached third on a one-out double and a wild pitch.

Mike Clark (2-1), who pitched a scoreless 10th, was the winner.

Cal Lutheran is 5-3, 2-0.

Santa Barbara 8, Antelope Valley 7--Antelope Valley nearly won for the second time in three games, but Santa Barbara overcame a 6-2 deficit with six runs in the seventh and eighth innings of the nonconference game at Santa Barbara.

Reliever Steve Medina started his first game of the season and helped Antelope Valley to a 6-2 lead after six innings.

However, Santa Barbara fought back in the seventh with four runs, including a leadoff home run.

Santa Barbara scored the winning run in the eighth when Keith McDonald hit a two-out, two-run single off loser Clint Reuter (0-2).

Antelope Valley catcher Steve Lasagna hit his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth, and Mike Mueller had two doubles. Antelope Valley fell to 2-11.

Reliever Tony Gomez (1-2) earned the win for Santa Barbara (4-7).

Desert 3, Glendale 1 (10 innings)--It was a pitchers’ duel at Glendale where both starters went the distance in a nonconference game.

Desert’s Devin Peppers finally broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run home run off Mike Peterson in the top of the 10th. Ron Hotmer earned the victory for Desert (2-10-1).

Glendale fell to 5-10.

El Camino 9, Valley 8--Mitch Cizek (1-2) took the loss for Valley, surrendering a one-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning in a nonconference game at El Camino. Former Burroughs star E. J. Pape went three for five for Valley (4-9-1).

Pierce 9, West L.A. 0--Pierce did not lose a set in its Western State Conference men’s match at West L.A. Pierce’s Al Martinez blanked Paul Salvador in No. 1 singles and combined with Jason Gary to defeat Salvador and Leonard Johns in No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-1.

No. 2 singles player Gary had the most challenging match for Pierce (3-3, 3-1 in conference play), defeating Johns, 7-5, 6-1.

West L.A. fell to 0-4.

Moorpark 7, Bakersfield 2--Moorpark swept all three doubles matches to clinch a Western State Conference women’s match at Bakersfield.

At No. 1 doubles, the mother-daughter team of Patti Nakawatase and Elise Nakawatase won in straight sets.

The Nakawatases also won their singles matches. Elise beat Cindy Burr, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, and Patti won a doubles match.

Moorpark (4-1, 2-1 in conference play) won four out of six singles matches and had crucial victories at No. 2 and No. 4.
