USD Beats SDSU in Women’s Tennis

After winning four of five singles matches, 16th-ranked University of San Diego defeated No. 17 San Diego State, 5-3, with a victory at No. 1 doubles Tuesday at SDSU.

USD’s Aby Brayton defeated Michelle Apra, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Brayton later teamed with Sakolwan Kacharoen to defeat Nicole Storto and Dorey Brandt, 7-6, 7-6, at No. 1 doubles. USD improved to 5-2. SDSU is 3-6.

PADRES

The Padres and St. Louis Cardinals announced they had completed a three-player deal involving players who spent the 1989 season in the minor leagues.

The Padres obtained outfielder Alex Cole and left-handed pitcher Steve Peters in exchange for right-handed pitcher Omar Olivares.

Of the three, Peters, 27, is the only one with time in the majors. Appearing exclusively in relief for the Cardinals, he pitched in 12 games in 1987 and 44 in 1988, when he had a 3-3 record and 6.40 earned-run average in 45 innings.

Last season in triple-A Louisville, he was 1-7 with a 2.93 earned-run average and 10 saves. He has averaged 67 appearances over the past three seasons.

Cole, 24, spent most of the 1989 season in Louisville, hitting .281 in 127 games with 75 runs scored and a American Assn.-leading 47 stolen bases. It was the fifth time in six seasons that he had stolen 40 or more bases.

Olivares, 21, spent 1989 in Wichita, going 12-11 with a 3.39 ERA in 26 games, all starts. He had six complete games.

Refunds for the Padres’ canceled opening exhibition series against the Angels, scheduled for Friday through Monday in Yuma, can be obtained only after the scheduled date of the game. Unused tickets should be mailed, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope, to Caballeros de Yuma, Box 230, Yuma, Ariz., 85366.

Fans holding tickets for more than one game of the Angel series are asked to wait until all scheduled dates have passed before mailing in for a refund.

BASEBALL

Tom Urbani held visiting San Diego State to five hits and No. 13 Cal State Long Beach defeated the Aztecs, 8-4, in a nonconference game.

The Aztecs (9-4) scored in the top of the eighth to cut the 49ers’ lead to 4-3, but Cal State Long Beach (12-6) scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

UC Irvine scored five runs in each of the fourth and sixth innings and went on to win its seventh consecutive game with a 14-8 nonconference victory at U.S. International.

Darrin Forster had a two-run homer and Kyle Sebach added a three-run home run for USIU (4-9-1). Both are freshmen out of Santana High School. UC Irvine (9-6) won its seventh in a row.

UC San Diego got six walks and scored seven runs in the fourth inning en route to a 10-6 victory over visiting University of San Diego (7-7).

UCSD’s Mike Morgan struck out six batters, walked one and when he left the plate in the sixth inning UCSD led, 10-1. J.J. Fisher was two for four with four RBIs for UCSD (4-5).

Mark Ratekin was three for five with a single, triple, home run and five RBIs as Point Loma Nazarene held on for an 11-9 nonconference victory at Claremont-Mudd.

Ratekin, who also pitched the final two innings, had a three-run homer in the fourth inning for PLNC (4-4-1). Claremont-Mudd (4-4) scored six runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth after PLNC led, 11-0.
