City All-Stars Shine Brightest : Prep basketball: Southern Section boys routed, 159-119. Girls’ rally falls short, 77-76.

Pierce College stadium manager Rob DiMuro knew what to expect. He showed up at the Pierce gymnasium an hour early to tighten the basketball rims in anticipation of the beating they were going to take.

The rims took a beating all right, but not as bad a beating as the City Section all-stars administered to their brethren from the Southern Section on Friday night, whipping them, 159-119, in a high school all-star basketball game sponsored by the Greater San Fernando Valley Boys’ and Girls’ Club.

In the girls’ game that preceded the boys’ contest, the City Section held off a late Southern Section charge to win, 77-76.

In the boys’ match, the City Section blitzed the Southern Section by forcing 39 turnovers--22 of them in the first half when the City bolted to an 80-59 lead.

It only got worse in the third period as Russell Baldwin of San Fernando scored 10 of his game-high 29 points.

The City reached the century mark with 5 minutes 10 seconds left in the third quarter on a Baldwin layup and led, 114-83, after three periods.

The fourth period was extended garbage time and a showcase for All-City performer Dana Jones of North Hollywood, who scored six of his 11 points on three consecutive slam dunks.

The City got a lift from a pair of Granada Hills players, Aaron Lattimore (19) and Jermoine Brantley (18), who combined for 37 points.

Grant’s Rene de la Hoya (12 points) and Canoga Park’s Marcus Reed (11) also reached double figures for the City.

Antelope Valley’s Chris Walters led the Southern Section with 28 points and had several spectacular dunks. Steve Carnes of Simi Valley had 24 points and Russell Myers of Royal added 17.

Chad Fotheringham of Hart had 13 points and a game-high 17 rebounds for the Southern Section.

In the girls’ game, the City Section led most of the way and entered the fourth period with a 57-53 advantage. The City extended its lead to 73-66 before the Southern Section made its charge.

The Southern Section closed to 73-70 on two free throws by Westlake’s Melissa Gische and pulled to 75-73 on a three-point play by Palmdale’s Martanya Blair.

Blair made one of two free throws with 46 seconds left to make it 75-74.

But Sylmar’s Katina Mines hit a layup and Karee Bonde of Palmdale was fouled before she could get off a three-point shot with 10 seconds left. Bonde made both free throws, but the City ran out the clock.

Van Nuys’ Stacie Toon led all scorers with 16 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds before fouling out with 5:13 to play. Mines added 14 points and nine rebounds.

Tammy Pacheco of Simi Valley led the Southern Section with 15 points. Bonde and Gische each had 11.
