Vitali Scherbo, an unheralded 18-year-old Soviet gymnast, became European champion in three of six apparatus finals at Lausanne, Switzerland.

Scherbo won the floor exercise, vault and horizontal bar competition as Soviets and East Europeans dominated the finish of the men’s European Gymnastics Championships.

Compatriot Valentin Mogilny, who won his first individual European title in the all-around Saturday, won on the pommel horse and tied for first on the parallel bars with Switzerland’s Daniel Giubellini.

Italy’s Yuri Chechi, on the rings, was the only undisputed West European winner.
