THE SIDELINES : Douglas Resumes Training
Even though he hadn’t had an organized workout since winning the heavyweight title four months ago, James (Buster) Douglas had plenty of incentive when he returned to the gym.
“The first couple of weeks will be a definite physical and mental adjustment,” said Douglas’ trainer, John Johnson. “But he likes being champ. He’ll get it done.”
Douglas opened workouts at a local fitness center in his hometown Monday night despite not knowing whom, where or when he is fighting next.
Douglas gained the undisputed heavyweight title Feb. 10 in Tokyo when he knocked out Mike Tyson.
He is hoping to fight No. 1 challenger Evander Holyfield on Sept. 20 in Las Vegas. But a legal wrangle with promoter Don King has put Douglas’ plans in limbo.
“The timing is perfect. There’s a hunger in all of us to get back and (fight) again,” Johnson said.
A federal district judge in New York will decide on June 26 whether Douglas can proceed with his suit against King.
