THE OPEN FESTIVAL

The Open Festival is a non-curated component of the overall Los Angeles Festival, open to artists free of charge. It will include more than 600 events at about 400 sites throughout greater Los Angeles. Following is a partial listing of this week’s Open Festival events in the South Bay.

Visual Arts

‘Perfect Shadows: Photography by Tri Tran’--Tri Tran’s delicate silver photographs capture the ability of photography to go beyond objectivity. (Norris Film Gallery, Palos Verdes Art Center, 5504 W. Crestridge Road, Rancho Palos Verdes). Ongoing: Monday-Saturday, 1-4 p.m., free.

‘Eleanor Komai: Vessels’--Inspired by reflections upon past experiences and such natural forms as the patterns of tree bark or snowdrifts, Komai transposes these images to richly textured clay surfaces. (Collectors Gallery, Palos Verdes Art Center, 5504 W. Crestridge Road). Ongoing: Monday-Saturday, 1-4 p.m., free.

‘Soul to Earth’--Exhibition by ShamanArt, a group of spiritually and environmentally inspired artists. (Minus Zero Gallery, 5029 Pacific Coast Highway, Torrance). Opens Saturday: Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; free.

Media Events

Profiles of California Artists, Video Compilation--A one-hour video compilation narrated by Peter Sellars, profiling California artists. (Manhattan Beach Public Arts Project, Multivision Channel 10, Manhattan Beach). Begins Saturday: various dates and times on Manhattan Beach cable television.

Music

Fiesta de los Artes, Hermosa Beach Street Fair--Annual Labor Day event hosting hundreds of artists including dance, music, fine art, crafts and food. Zydeco Party Band will be the final act each day, featuring traditional, contemporary cajun/zydeco mardi gras music. (Hermosa Avenue

at Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach). Saturday and Sunday: 3-6 p.m., free.

Zydeco Party Band--Traditional contemporary and original Cajun/zydeco mardi gras music. A continuation of the Labor Day Fiesta de los Artes. (Pork Chop Brown’s, 3600 Highland Ave., Manhattan Beach). Sunday: 8 p.m.-midnight, free.

Family Events

Open Festival Artists--Participants in the Open Festival will appear at various times throughout the day as a part of the “Around Town” program of the Los Angeles Festival. (Angels Gate Cultural Center, Wilder Park, San Pedro). Sept. 1,2,3, Noon-6 p.m., free.

‘Urbanities Evolve!’--A performance collective creating an “Earth carnival” in an abandoned mortar shell bunker through interconnected surrealist events. Street performers, dancers, musicians and visual artists. (Angels Gate Bunker 241, 3601 S. Gaffey St., Building A, San Pedro). Saturday and Sunday: 2-6 p.m., free.

Rose of the World--Environmental and experimental modern dance piece set amid the blooms at Wilder Park. (Wilder Park, San Pedro). Saturday: 3 p.m., free.

Theater

Loud Mouth Chowder--A one-woman, multi-character comedy that follows a struggling actress on a transformational journey home to her parents’ funeral. Original work by Joanne Green and Melanie Jones. (Angels Gate Cultural Center, 3601 S. Gaffey St., San Pedro). Opens Saturday: Friday-Sunday, 8 p.m. $10 general admission, $8.50 for seniors and students.
