How to Visit the Bridge at Remagen

Share

Getting there: Remagen is easily accessible by car from Bonn on the main highway running along the west bank of the Rhine. It’s about 12 miles away. There is also train and riverboat service.

Accommodations: We found only one hotel directly on the river--the Furstenberg. The rooms are bright and spacious and overlook the Rhine through large picture windows.

Lilac and tulips brighten the attractive dining room, which also has a view of the river. The rate for our double room with bath in late April was $66, including breakfast.

The British AA guide lists only two hotels in Remagen--the Furstenberg and the Fassbender. Avoid the Fassbender at all costs. The untidy room we were shown had no bath, no hot water and no view and was vastly overpriced at $44.

But we had still another reason for looking elsewhere--a huge, snarling German shepherd prowling the lobby.

Where to eat: The town center of Remagen has a number of small, reasonably priced cafes and brasseries catering mostly to local residents. The cafes along the riverfront are more expensive and the menus are more cosmopolitan.

The Furstenberg and Da Franca Pizzeria, also on the promenade, have excellent chefs. Dinner for two with wine at both restaurants was under $50.
