SIDELINES : Hot Rod Williams, After Signing Big Offer, Sets Sights on Sonics
John (Hot Rod) Williams was en route to Seattle today to talk to the SuperSonics about a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers.
“Money has nothing to do with this. I want to be settled somewhere and know I can play where they want me,” he told the Morning News Tribune before leaving his New Orleans home Tuesday. “To play up front with the Sonics sounds like fun.”
He signed a seven-year, $26.5-million offer sheet with the Miami Heat that was matched by the Cavaliers last month.
“I never thought they’d match it,” he said. “We were ready to move to Miami. Then the Cavs matched it, and we moved to Akron.”
Williams, 28, a former Tulane star, averaged 16.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.0 blocks last year for the Cavs. The 6-11, 230-pound forward played in all 82 games.
The Sonics reportedly have offered Nate McMillan and Xavier McDaniel for Williams.
