Sheriff Block on Gangs and Drugs

Share

In response to “Drugs Not Main Cause for Gangs, Sheriff Says” (Metro, Sept. 20):

At last, a leading law enforcement officer speaks to the “why” of the gang violence in Los Angeles. Only the voters can correct the social cancer eating its way through the poor, young, elderly and disadvantaged members of our county, which helps feed gang violence.

The bottom line is if we want the gang violence and the other social cancers reduced, we must elect more responsive representatives. To do this, we must reform the special-interest contributions. Canada has a system that requires funds for candidates to come primarily from their election district, with the amount of contributions limited in size.

This or some similar plan is the only way to put responsibility into politics and get the politicians to deal with society’s needs.
