WORLD : Lebanon Seeks Syria Army Help
Lebanese President Elias Hrawi has formally asked the Syrian army to help crush Maj. Gen. Michel Aoun’s resistance to his rule, government sources said today.
They said presidential adviser Faris Boueiz delivered the request Wednesday as Aoun showed no sign of caving in to the tightening of the blockade on East Beirut’s Christian enclave.
“We asked Syria to help the legitimate government expand its authority in the country and end the state of mutiny,” one official told the Reuters news agency.
No details were available on the Syrian response, but Damascus has repeatedly expressed willingness to act on any request for military help from Hrawi, Lebanon’s internationally recognized president.
