Fight School Assessment Fees

Share

A state law passed over the summer authorizes counties to assess school districts for the collection of property taxes. We urge the Ventura County Board of Supervisors not to impose these fees as it would have a devastating effect on our already financially strapped schools.

The Conejo Unified School District could be charged over $600,000 in fees which equals the salary of 16 teachers, enough to staff one elementary school.

We realize that mental health, children’s protective services, family planning and public health funds have also been drastically cut and the Board of Supervisors has to help these programs. However, taking money from the schools these same people depend on makes no sense. We should not allow the state to pit programs against each other. We must find other ways to meet the need.

We urge all voters to protest this unjust taxation on our schools by:

Calling or writing to the Board of Supervisors urging them not to take school funds

Calling or writing Assemblyman Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks) and state Sen. Ed Davis (R-Santa Clarita) and asking them to assist in getting SB2557 repealed

Calling the governor’s office and letting him know the public won’t stand for this

Joining other parents to enact a plan to fight this threat to our schools.

In November, we should vote for a governor who believes in education.
