SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Driver Training Program Modified

Share

After dropping behind-the-wheel driver training courses because of state budget cuts, Capistrano Unified School District trustees have decided to reinstate the program, but with an added fee for students.

The program will be offered after school through the district’s community services department. A private driver education firm will offer the training for about $100, plus an administrative fee required by the district, Assistant Supt. William Eller said.

District officials had decided to drop their driver training program in September after they were notified that the state could no longer pay for it.

It would have cost the district about $91,000 to pick up the tab for the instruction, according to district estimates. Unable to afford that cost, the district looked for a way to offer the program at a reduced cost without violating laws that prohibit public schools from charging for classes.

The district explored offering the course through the Regional Occupation Program or adult education, but settled on the community services route because it is the only program through which an administrative fee can be charged, according to state and county education officials.

Six hours of behind-the-wheel training are required for a California driver’s license at 16.

Students will have the choice of taking the class through the district or going to a private school. Local driving schools charge between $159 and $263 for the classes.
