Cal State Northridge announced the signing of 10 junior college transfers, four high school players and a transfer from USC on Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA signing period for football.

The four high school players Northridge signed all hail from the Valley region.

Leading the list is Jonathan Campbell, the City Section 3-A Division player of the year from Poly High. Campbell rushed for 2,091 yards and 31 touchdowns last fall to help carry Poly to a City championship. Campbell also is a top baseball prospect. He batted .357 as an outfielder last season.

Brian Feola, an offensive lineman from Burbank Burroughs, signed with the Matadors, as did John Doherty, an offensive lineman, and Troy Aldrich, a tight end, both from Canyon. Aldrich also is expected to play volleyball.

Among the 11 junior college transfers are five who will not enroll at CSUN until the fall semester. They are Rick Cain, a wide receiver from Porterville; Bryan Ward, a linebacker from Chaffey; Jose Casillas, an offensive tackle from Citrus; and linebacker Joseph Ojomoh and defensive back Gerald Ponder, both from Riverside.

Already enrolled at Northridge are Mike Wade, a kicker from Orange Coast; Jeff York, a defensive tackle from Yuba; Jim Warren, a fullback from Orange Coast; Jason Silverstein, an offensive tackle from Valley; and William Harris, a running back from Harbor.

Pete McLaughlin, an inside linebacker from Carson High, transferred from USC, where he was a team member two years ago.

“As far as our scheme goes, all these guys should make contributions,” said CSUN Coach Bob Burt, whose team was 7-4 and co-champion of the Western Football Conference last season. “We signed them all for a purpose, either to fill a void or to step in and compete for a job.”

Also on Wednesday, five players from local junior colleges revealed their choices by signing letters of intent with Division I schools, among them Lolesio Takapu of Glendale College, a second-team J. C. Grid-Wire All-American linebacker, who signed with New Mexico State.

Glendale defensive back Keith Franklin, an All-WSC Northern Division first-team selection, signed with South Carolina, and Moorpark tight end Tremmel Hamm chose Cincinnati. Valley defensive back Lamark Allen and former Glendale offensive tackle Broderick Jenkins both signed with Cal State Fullerton.
