Two people were injured Sunday night when their light plane crashed in North Hollywood, Los Angeles police said. It was the second such crash in the area during the weekend.

The Malibu Piper PA-46 went down in the 7200 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard at the L.A. Auto Salvage yard about 8:30 p.m, Federal Aviation Administration officials said.

The pilot and passenger sustained moderate injuries, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said. Both complained of back and shoulder pain and were transported to local hospitals. No one on the ground was hurt.

“The flight was inbound to Santa Monica Airport, when it incurred a loss of power” said Tom Aina, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. The pilot was attempting an alternate landing at Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport, but crashed three miles to the west, Aina said.

Officials did not know why the plane begin to lose power or where it was coming from at the time of the crash. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating.

Sunday’s crash was the second near the Burbank airport this weekend. On Saturday, a light plane ran out of fuel and crashed in a residential neighborhood. The pilot and a passenger were injured.
