Two people were injured Sunday night when their light plane crashed into a salvage yard in North Hollywood, Los Angeles police said.

The plane, a Piper Malibu PA-46, crashed at L. A. Auto Salvage in the 7200 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard about 8:30 p.m., Federal Aviation Administration officials said.

The pilot and passenger suffered moderate injuries in the crash, said Kevin Isozaki, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

“The flight was inbound to Santa Monica when it incurred a loss of power,” said Tom Aina, spokesman for the FAA.

The pilot was attempting to land at Burbank Airport but crash-landed three miles to the west, Aina said.

Officials did not know why the plane began to lose power or where it was from.

The pilot and passenger were taken to local hospitals complaining of back pain and shoulder problems.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board were investigating the cause of the crash.

Sunday’s crash was the second light plane crash near Burbank Airport this weekend. A light plane ran out of fuel Saturday and crashed in a residential neighborhood near the airport.
