Sheriff’s deputies who heard gunshots stopped two people who were running from a house, then went inside and found a man shot to death and a woman wounded, authorities said.

Detectives did not immediately reveal a possible motive for the shooting, which occurred about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in an unincorporated county stretch of Compton in the 1100 block of South White Street.

Compton Police Sgt. John Faber said the deputies, who were on patrol, heard gunshots coming from the house before the suspects ran out. After chasing the pair and arresting them, they entered the house and found Warren Navarre Jr., 38, and Valerie Jones wounded. Navarre died a short time later at a hospital. Booked on suspicion of murder were Barry Dosie, 18, and a 17-year-old youth who was not identified because of his age.
