THOUSAND OAKS : School Panel Retains 3 Posts, Cuts Others

Conejo Valley school board members have voted to keep three clerical positions that were scheduled to be cut, making other reductions necessary to balance the $70.7-million 1991-92 budget.

The board also voted Thursday to cut 22 teaching positions and at least 58 janitorial, clerk and other non-teaching positions. Bonus pay for 15 coaches was also eliminated. District officials said they will consider restoring the sports pay if outside funding is secured.

Although the Conejo Valley Unified School District needs to cut $3.6 million, board member Dolores Didio balked at deleting a clerk typist position at each of the three high schools. The typists help with attendance records used to calculate state funding. “If the work doesn’t get done, it could be counter-productive. I don’t think one clerk will be able to accomplish it,” she said.

Board President Richard Newman and member Dorothy Beaubien also voted to keep the positions, which will require the district to make $71,100 in cuts elsewhere. Supt. William Seaver was instructed to examine the district office and maintenance department staffs for ways to make additional cuts.

The two other board members, William H. Henry Jr. and Mildred Lynch, voted against the proposal.

Stan McClain, president of the California School Employees Assn., the classified workers’ union, said he was glad to see the three positions restored. He would, however, rather have seen cuts made at the classified management level.

The budget is based on the district receiving no cost-of-living increase from the state.
