A Mission Viejo man who was stopped by police for erratic driving suffered a seizure after being handcuffed and was hospitalized in critical condition, police said Friday.

The man, later identified as William Franklin Richbourg, 38, allegedly ran a stop sign to turn right onto North Flower Street and began weaving in and out of oncoming traffic. Police said he sideswiped a 1982 Chevrolet pickup--the occupant in the truck was not injured--before coming to a stop on North Flower Street.

Richbourg was handcuffed and taken into custody “without incident,” Haacker said. But after being handcuffed, Haacker said he “suffered a series of convulsions or seizures.” Paramedics took him to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was listed in critical condition Friday afternoon.

Haacker said the cause of his seizure was unknown. She added that Richbourg might face charges of possessing a loaded handgun in a vehicle and hit-and-run.
