PLNC’s Silander, Crouch Set Records in NAIA Championships

Michael Silander and Vanessa Crouch of Point Loma Nazarene each set school records in their events at the NAIA track and field championships in Stephenville, Tex. Both marks came in the preliminaries as Silander and Crouch advanced to today’s semifinal rounds.

Silander won his heat in the men’s 100 meters with a time of 10.55 seconds. That broke the PLNC record of 10.64 set by John Toro in 1989.

Crouch sliced nearly 20 seconds off her PLNC record in the 3,000 meters, finishing 10:06.69.

Anna Mark finished eighth in the finals of the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 11 inches, and Christian Andreasson was 11th in the finals of the javelin at 181-11.

After four events in the heptathlon, Alicia Harasty is in ninth place with 2,619 points, and David Reidhav is in 11th with 3,326 points after five events in the decathlon.

Three UC San Diego athletes qualified for the finals at the NCAA Division III championships at Berea, Ohio.

Erica Washington had the second fastest time in the women’s 100 meters, finishing in 12.15 seconds. Michelle Milledge ran a 12.57 but did not qualify.

Shannon Quigley’s discus throw of 147-feet-8 was third best on the day for the women, and Debbie Hargrove also qualified with a toss of 125-4.

Other Tritons that failed to qualify were: Yvette Marzullo (59.63 in the women’s 400 meters); Ian Cook (6-6 3/4 in the men’s high jump); and Susan Christy (5-4 1/4 in the women’s high jump).

UCSD will be represented in six finals today and four on Saturday.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

El Camino’s Jeff Reeves has signed with Southern California College, an NAIA power in Costa Mesa.

Reeves had 102 three-pointers and averaged 20.2. points this year.

SCC was the District 3 champion this year.

Also given a scholarship to SCC was Edmund Johnson, who graduated from El Camino in 1986, took off a few years, and has since been playing at Saddleback.

FENCING

More than 250 fencers will compete Sunday through Monday at the Pacific Coast Fencing Championships at UC San Diego’s Triton Gymnasium.

The competitors, many of them national team and Olympic hopefuls, will try to qualify for June’s USFA Nationals in Chicago.

Individuals and teams compete in men’s and women’s foil, epee and sabre. There are also divisions for under-19 competitors. It begins at 9 a.m. daily, to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and to 1 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
