BREA : City Staff Cuts, Rate Increases Weighed

Share

Staff reductions and increases in water and trash rates will be considered by the City Council today along with several other belt-tightening measures to offset an estimated $1.5-million budget shortfall.

Under the city’s $24-million spending plan, it is recommended that three Police Department positions and one in administrative services be left vacant.

Several programs may also be cut, including the gallery exhibit and the Art in the Park program. Staff members have also suggested eliminating recreational swim time and the annual Hoop Classic Basketball Tournament.

Included in the budget package are increases in residential trash and water rates, but city officials said they will not help offset the deficit. The plan calls for residents to pay about $1.49 more a month for trash pickup and $3 to $5 more for water.

A public hearing on the proposed budget is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
