Williams Impressive in UCLA Scrimmage

Kevin Williams, UCLA’s injury-plagued tailback, ran hard Saturday in an intrasquad scrimmage at the Rose Bowl, gaining 38 yards in five carries.

UCLA Coach Terry Donahue did not include Williams when he assessed his regular running backs recently. He said Williams would simply be trying to make the team along with some other players.

Asked to comment on Donahue’s remarks, Williams, a junior said: “I don’t worry about it. I just want to go out and play hard.”

Donahue was generally pleased with the controlled workout, mainly because there were no major injuries.

“As a group our backs had a good day,” Donahue said, identifying Williams, Ricky Davis, Maury Toy, Shawn Wills and Chris Alexander.

Quarterback Tommy Maddox completed a three-yard scoring pass to tight end Steve Blinn and Luis Perez made a pair of 42-yard field goals. Dominic Sandifer was one for two from 42 yards out.

Several Bruins didn’t play because of injuries, including nose guard Emmanuel Onwuetuebe, wide receiver Michael Moore, linebackers Stacy Argo, James Malone and Rod Smalley and free safety Michael Williams.

Donahue said all of the injured players should be available for the opener Sept. 7 against Brigham Young at the Rose Bowl.

Maddox completed 13 of 24 passes for 129 yards while throwing two interceptions. Some of his passes were dropped. Backup quarterback Jim Bonds was seven for 14 with one interception.
