Police Raid Suspected Pirate Video Laboratory
Monterey Park police on Wednesday confiscated 58 videocassette recorders, other sophisticated electronic equipment and hundreds of videotapes from a warehouse believed to be a pirate video laboratory and distribution center.
No arrests were made, but officers are continuing to investigate the man who was renting the facility at 1320 Monterey Pass Road, Police Sgt. Orlo Olsen said. He declined to name the tenant.
A total of 832 video cassettes were seized, including illegal recordings of the newly released “Dances With Wolves,” “The Jungle Book,” “F/X 2,” and “V.I. Warshawski.” Chinese-language tapes also were confiscated.
The Motion Picture Assn. of America, which assisted in the raid, believes the operation was a major source of pirated videos in the Los Angeles area and may have distributed cassettes overseas.
