PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Huntington Beach Offense Too Quick for San Dieguito

Share

Huntington Beach High School’s three-guard offense generated too much speed for San Dieguito to handle Thursday night as the Oilers raced to an 80-37 victory in the second round of the Pilot Tipoff Classic at Corona del Mar High.

Huntington Beach (2-0) made 14 of 19 shots in the first half to open a 33-15 halftime lead and created numerous fast-break baskets with a pressure defense that repeatedly forced San Dieguito turnovers.

“We have a three-guard offense, so we better generate turnovers,” Huntington Beach Coach Roy Miller said. “We have five starters capable of putting the ball in the hole, so I don’t think you’ll see (opposing) defenses cheat on us.”

Huntington Beach’s balanced scoring was led by guard Tommy Walden with 16 points and reserve Chris Swann, who had 11 points and eight rebounds. Brian Chang also scored 11 points and Matt Ambrose added 10.

“I don’t think we have one great player, but five equally talented ballplayers,” Miller said. The Oilers start four juniors, and Miller might have a future star in sophomore Tony Gonzalez. He is a very physical 6-foot-4, 210-pounder who had eight points and five rebounds in limited playing time.
