School: Los Alamitos High

Sport: Football

Position: Quarterback

Class: Junior

Los Alamitos has struggled at times this season and often it has been left up to Carey to lead late rallies. Saturday in a Division III semifinal against third-seeded Newhall Hart, Carey did it again. Trailing, 23-21, in the third quarter, Carey threw touchdown passes of 56 and 39 yards to give the Griffins a 37-21 lead, helping to assure the victory. “We kind of backed off a little bit because we were trying to take time off the clock,” Los Alamitos Coach John Barnes said. Carey finished with 261 yards passing and four touchdown passes, giving him 2,291 yards and 20 touchdowns for the season with one game remaining--the rematch with Empire League rival Esperanza Saturday for the Southern Section championship.

Other top performers:

Mike Jacot, who rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns in Southern California Christian’s 20-10 victory over Rosamond in a Division X semifinal game. Jacot has 34 touchdowns this season, which ties the Orange County single-season record set by Ron Papazian of Whittier Christian in 1989.

Marcus Jenkins, who rushed for 178 yards and four touchdowns in Dana Hills’ 35-6 victory over Dominguez in the Division II semifinals.
