Former King Steve Duchesne expected to play well defensively for the Philadelphia Flyers. What he didn’t expect was a scoring drought that would last nearly two months.

He finally broke loose Thursday night with a hat trick at Philadelphia and the Flyers went on to a 6-2 victory over the New York Islanders.

Duchesne’s first goal was his first since Nov. 8 and his first at home. The second goal was the 100th of his career.

The victory was Philadelphia’s second in 16 Patrick Division games (2-11-3). The Islanders came into the game with a 5-1-1 record in their last seven road games.

Chicago 6, Montreal 4--Michel Goulet’s second goal of the game and 495th of his career broke a 4-4 second-period tie at Chicago that helped Blackhawk goalie Eddie Belfour remain perfect at home in seven games.

Patrick Roy of the Canadiens, the NHL’s top goalie with a 2.00 goals-against average, entered the game after the Blackhawks had rallied from a 2-0 deficit with four unanswered goals. Roy had won 14 of his last 21 decisions (14-6-1).

Pittsburgh 6, Boston 4--Jaromir Jagr scored two goals, including the tiebreaker on a rink-length dash, in the first five minutes of the third period at Boston to lead the Penguins to their fourth victory in five games.

Joe Mullen, Kevin Stevens, Ron Francis and Mark Recchi also scored for the Penguins.

New Jersey 4, Hartford 1--Scott Stevens scored the first of two power-play goals and set up another at Hartford to help the Devils end a five-game winless streak.

Claude Vilgrain scored twice and Stephane Richer had a goal and an assist as the Whalers dropped to 2-8-3 in their last 13 home games.

St. Louis 4, San Jose 0--Curtis Joseph recorded his first career shutout and set a team record with his fifth assist as the Blues won for the seventh time in their last eight games at home.

Joseph, who has started 11 of the Blues’ last 12 games, had 21 saves. He assisted on St. Louis’ fourth goal to break the team record he had shared with Mike Liut, who had four assists in 1983-84.

Quebec 5, Calgary 5--The Flames scored three goals in a span of 5:07 in the third period at Calgary to get a tie with the Nordiques.

Gary Roberts, who had two goals, sent the game into overtime with a power-play goal with 2:38 remaining.

Owen Nolan scored twice to help Quebec build a 5-2 lead. The Nordiques are still winless on the road at 0-12-3.

Vancouver 3, Winnipeg 1--Greg Adams and Trevor Linden scored third-period goals at Vancouver to lead the Canucks past the Jets.
