PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : They Will Lose Sleep Over Defeat

Share

Sunday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs not only cost the Raiders the home-field advantage for Saturday’s rematch in a wild-card game, it will also cost the team a good night’s sleep.

Because of the early start, 11:30 a.m. Central time, the Raiders must set wake-up calls for 7:30 a.m. Saturday in Kansas City. That’s 5:30 a.m. PST.

“You’ve got to try and sleep fast,” Coach Art Shell said. “Get in, eat, force yourself to go to bed even if you don’t go to sleep. Even if you can’t sleep because of the time change. At least if you’re in bed, laying down, you’re resting your body. That’s the most important thing.”

The Raiders placed cornerback Garry Lewis on injured reserve because of an ankle injury.

He will be replaced on the roster by rookie cornerback Tahaun Lewis, who was on the practice squad.

Final regular-season rankings: Kicker Jeff Jaeger finished second among AFC scorers with 116 points. He made 29 of 34 field-goal attempts and fell one point shy of tying George Blanda’s Raider scoring record.

Punter Jeff Gossett led the NFL with a net average of 38.5 yards. Ronnie Lott led the league with eight interceptions.

Greg Townsend finished fourth in the AFC with 13 sacks. Teammate Anthony Smith finished fifth with 10.5.

Quarterback Jay Schroeder ended with a rating of 71.4, second worst among AFC qualifiers to John Friesz of San Diego at 67.1.
