SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Jerry Hayes pinned Calvary Chapel’s Mike Folmar with 55 seconds elapsed in the heavyweight match and Yucca Valley gained a 30-29 victory over the Eagles in the first Southern Section 1-A dual meet championship finals Friday at Edison High School.

Temecula Valley (16-2) completed the Inland Empire’s 1-2 sweep over Orange County schools by defeating Buena Park, 33-21, for the 2-A championship.

Calvary Chapel (13-8), which has won two consecutive team titles in the Southern Section 1-A individual elimination tournament, won seven of the 12 matches and led, 25-9, going into the 152-pound match.

But the Trojans won four of the next five matches, including a forfeit at 171 pounds and a pin by Adam Aversa over the Eagles’ Armondo Parra with 1 minute 36 seconds elapsed in the 160-pound match. Perhaps Calvary Chapel’s most costly loss of the day came when Lawrence Giron pinned Josh Holiday with only 51 seconds elapsed in the 103-pound match.

Calvary Chapel recorded only one pin. Joey Coughran defeated Luie Barragan with 3:59 elapsed in the 120-pound class.

“I’m disappointed we got stuck (pinned) three times,” Calvary Chapel Coach John Azevedo said. “We should have won at 103. Our kid finished fifth and theirs didn’t even place in the CIF tournament. When we get stuck, we’re gonna lose.”

Buena Park (20-6-1) also got off to a bad start when Temecula Valley’s Mark Pennyman pinned Jeremy Harper at 3:17 in the 103-pound category. Temecula Valley (15-1) won seven of the 12 matches, with three others ending in a draw.
