Toros Can Finish Third in CCAA With Victory

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team will try to clinch third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. when it plays Chapman at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Orange.

Dominguez Hills (15-11 overall, 7-6 in CCAA play) trails UC Riverside and Cal State Bakersfield in the conference standings. Chapman is 7-18 overall and last in the conference at 2-11.

If the Toros win, they will play Bakersfield in the first round of the four-team conference postseason tournament, which begins Friday in Riverside. The Toros clinched a tournament berth last week with a 63-58 upset of Riverside, which is ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division II.

Dominguez Hills has already defeated Chapman twice this season, 66-50 in the Grand Canyon tournament in December and 62-57 on Jan. 31.

The Panthers are led by senior forward Roger Middleton, who is second in the conference in scoring at 19.7 points a game and rebounding at 8.8.

Michael Moore is leading the Toros in scoring at 11.4 points. The 6-foot-7 senior forward scored 15 points in a 53-47 loss to Cal State San Bernardino last week and 16 in a victory over Riverside.

Freshman guard Chris Thompson is averaging 9.1 points and sophomore forward John Brown is averaging a team-leading 5.2 rebounds for the Toros.

The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team will close out its home season with West Coast Conference games today and Saturday.

The Lions (6-18, 0-11) will play Gonzaga today and Portland on Saturday. Both games start at 5:20 p.m.

Loyola was held to its lowest point total in six seasons and lowest point total for a WCC team this season in a 79-35 loss to Pepperdine on Saturday. It was the 11th loss in a row for the Lions and the 17th in 18 games.

With three games remaining, the Lions’ best opportunity for a win may be today against Gonzaga. The Bulldogs (7-18, 4-8) defeated Loyola, 77-55, on Jan. 18 in Spokane, Wash., but have lost four games in a row.

Gonzaga has been led by freshman guard Ivy Safranski, who is averaging 14.6 points, and sophomore center Juanita Rivera, who is averaging 14.2 points and 10.3 rebounds.

Portland (13-12, 9-3) leads the WCC after defeating Santa Clara, 80-68, and San Diego, 83-66, last week.

Pilot senior forward Martha Sheldon leads the conference in scoring at 27.2 points. She became the conference’s all-time single-season scoring leader with 39 points against San Diego.

The Lions have been led by senior forward Joelle Longobardi and freshman forward Tanya White. Longobardi averages 13.3 points and seven rebounds and White averages 8.9 points and six rebounds.

Loyola Marymount will complete its season on Wednesday when it plays at Pepperdine at 8 p.m. The Waves are 14-10 and 6-5.

The El Camino and Harbor college men’s basketball teams will play road games to open the Southern California Regional playoffs on Saturday.

El Camino (11-13), seeded 22nd in the region, will visit 11th-seeded Mt. San Jacinto (23-9) and Harbor (18-14), seeded 20th, will play at 13th-seeded Cypress (20-10).

Both games start at 7 p.m.

The Loyola Marymount women’s swim team finished 10th at the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Championships last weekend at Long Beach.

Six Loyola swimmers were named to the conference all-academic team: Cristin Bisbee, Stacey Butler, Kathleen Hawkins, Sara Kinzer, Julie Suggs and Catherine Egan.

Egan, a junior, was the Lions’ top individual finisher, placing 27th out of 79 swimmers in the 100-meter freestyle. Her time was 55.68 seconds.

The Redondo Beach-based Vistas for Blind Children is holding the 13th annual Mobil St. Patrick’s Day Run for the Blind and World Wheelchair Challenge at 8 a.m. March 15 at the Del Amo Fashion Center.

There will be a 10-K run along with a dash, a stride and a wheelchair race.

The cost is $15 for all events except the dash, which is $7. There is an additional fee for entries after March 6.

Boys 7 to 12 are eligible to compete in the 15th annual L.A. Gear-American Roundball Corp. Future Stars Spring Development Basketball League that starts in March at Westchester High.

Registration is at 10 a.m. March 7 and 14 at the Westchester gym.

The cost is $110 cash or $125 by check. The entry fee includes a T-shirt, jersey, shorts and shoes.
