A Georgia man was being held in Ventura County Jail after being stopped in Ventura on Friday by a California Highway Patrol officer who arrested him on suspicion of abducting a 12-year-old girl from her Georgia home last month.

The car was stopped for an outstanding warrant, police said.

A CHP officer stopped the car at Seaward Avenue and Harbor Boulevard, where he arrested James L. Cornelius, 26, authorities said. Cornelius, who had not harmed the girl, is awaiting extradition to Georgia, authorities said. The county Public Social Services Agency will send the girl to her parents in Douglas County, Ga.
