COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Titans Get 22 Runs, Rout Pacific

Jason Moler had three hits, including a grand slam, as Cal State Fullerton routed the University of the Pacific, 22-6, in a Big West Conference game Saturday at Stockton.

Moler had six runs batted in to lead Fullerton’s 23-hit attack. His grand slam also highlighted the Titans’ nine-run sixth inning, which put Fullerton (22-6, 6-2) ahead, 13-2.

Dante Powell had four hits and three RBIs and Phil Nevin drew four walks and had two hits for the Titans. Dan Naulty (6-1) earned the victory, getting relief help from Chad Dembisky and Mark Holiday. Pacific is 10-19, 1-10.

In another Big West Conference game:

Fresno State 6, UC Irvine 0--Todd Johnson hit two home runs and Steve Soderstrom threw a two-hitter for host Fresno State (21-11, 4-1). Corey Parker’s first-inning single and Tim McDonnell’s second-inning single were the only hits for the Anteaters (14-11, 4-4).

After walking Parker with two outs in the third, Soderstrom retired 19 consecutive batters to close out the game, finishing with 12 strikeouts and two walks.

In a nonconference game:

USC 4, Chapman 2--Casey Burrill’s single drove in Lionel Hastings with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th and Bobby Hughes drove in Burrill with an insurance run as the Trojans won at Hart Park.

Chapman (21-11) had tied the game in the bottom on the ninth when pinch-hitter Thomas Puppe’s single drove in Larry Stahlhoefer. Stahlhoefer’s seventh inning homer accounted for the Panthers’ other run.

J.P. Roberge and Hughes hit homers in the fourth for USC (17-14). Aaron Boone, a former Villa Park High standout, was among five Trojans with two hits.
