Council Graduates New Volunteer Tutors

The South Coast Literacy Council graduated new volunteer tutors from classes at the Lutheran Church of the Cross in El Toro and Villa Del Obispo in San Juan Capistrano.

The students will be assigned to one of the council’s 20 tutoring centers throughout south Orange County to help foreign-born adults improve their English speaking, writing and reading skills.

The graduates from the El Toro location are Doris Delaine, Aliso Viejo; Eleanor Cabada, Dana Point; Phyllis Yale, Dove Canyon; Carolyn Cobb, El Toro; Shamshad Kothari, Irvine; Cecelia Brody and Jacey Hart, Laguna Hills; and Marie Vodicka, Laguna Niguel.

Others are Sylvia Lindgren, Lake Elsinore; Judy Erdei, Lake Forest; Elaine Bock, Joan Colucci, Jean Lyons, JoAnn Margolis and Marilyn Sarich, Mission Viejo; and Diane Hendee, Trabuco Canyon.

Graduates in San Juan Capistrano are Susan Reynolds, Aliso Viejo; Valerie Blomquist, Dana Point; Susan Duberg, Laguna Hills; Beatrice Hoffman, Sharon Olsen, Barbara Van de Water, Anna Ynda and David Zaniba, Laguna Niguel; Ken Boettcher, Monarch Beach; Harvey Bauer and Jan Fladd, San Clemente; and Camy Sullivan, San Juan Capistrano.

In Newport Beach, 16 new tutors received graduation certificates after their training from the Newport Beach Public Library’s literacy program.

They are Brian Carey, Sue Ann Fettes, Mary Reagan, Millicent Rhodes, Mary Lee Walton and Scott Dolan, Newport Beach; Julie Piskur and Cheryl Vogel, Costa Mesa; and Patty Curtin and Mary Flaherty, Corona del Mar.

Others are Maria Hedges, Balboa Island; Paul Baggett, Jennifer Hayden, Kristen Heskestad and Linda Mercure, Irvine; and Diane Finley, Aliso Viejo.

Each will tutor basic reading and English as a second language.

Patrick Rossetti, a sixth-grader at Del Obispo School in San Juan Capistrano, won first place and a $75 savings bond for his “Use Your Head, Wear a Helmet” poster in the Automobile Club of Southern California’s traffic safety poster contest.

His poster and 12 others by Capistrano Unified School District students who won merit awards have been submitted to a national competition scheduled for May.

Alicia Flores of Dana Point and Joan Provost of San Juan Capistrano were named recipients of $300 Training Awards Program grants from Soroptimist International of Capistrano Bay.

The awards are given to women who are entering or returning to the job market and need additional training, skills or education.

The Soroptimist group also picked Tim Masikian, a San Clemente High School senior, and Laura Blasingham, a senior at Capistrano Valley Christian School, to receive $300 youth awards.

In Dana Point, Darrin Roberts, a Dana Hills High School senior, was named the recipient of a Trustee Scholarship from USC. The award is a full four-year scholarship. Darrin plans to study film and video production at the School of Cinema.

Besides being active in the lighting and sound department at his high school, Darrin is a varsity athlete in soccer, track and cross country.

For the past three years, Darrin, son of Margol and Ken Roberts, has maintained a 4.16 grade-point average.

Speech professor Bob Bornemann, co-coach of the forensic team at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, was presented the Phi Rho Pi National Forensic Assn.’s Distinguished Service Award.

The honor was presented to the Laguna Niguel resident for “demonstrating over a period of time, dedication, commitment and action” to the group.

Two of his team members, Jason Van Divier of San Juan Capistrano and Kelley Paskey of El Toro were named national champions at the recent Phi Rho Pi national speech tournament in St. Louis.

Divier won in the impromptu category while Paskey, the team captain, won in the persuasive category.

Adam Gutteridge was named Maitre d’ of the Year and Restaurant Antoine in Newport Beach received the Golden Sceptre award from the Southern California Restaurant Writers Assn., its highest honor. Gutteridge is the maitre d’ at Restaurant Antoine.

Capistrano Beach resident Robert E. McDonough was presented the John Carroll Award, the highest honor given by the Georgetown University Alumni Assn., for lifetime achievement and exceptional service to the university. McDonough is chief executive officer for Remedy Temp Corp. in San Juan Capistrano.

Haydee V. Tillotson, a Huntington Beach resident and owner of Beachfront Properties and Tillotson Enterprises, was named 1992 Woman of the Year from the 58th Assembly District.

“Haydee deserves the honor,” said Assemblyman Tom Mays (R-Huntington Beach), who announced her selection for the award.

In 1990, Tillotson’s company was named Business of the Year by the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce.
