Ojai City Councilman Robert McKinney was selected by his fellow council members Tuesday to serve as the city’s mayor for the next year.

McKinney, who has served on the council since 1990, has been the city’s mayor pro tempore for the last year. His selection as mayor follows a local tradition of rotating the position annually among the five council members.

McKinney, who is retired, has lived in Ojai since 1964. Before retiring, he was general manager for the Casitas Municipal Water District for more than 23 years.

“I realize that figuratively and literally I have some big shoes to fill,” McKinney said as he thanked the council and outgoing Mayor James D. Loebl. “I will try very hard to do that and, if I can’t, at least not to embarrass you.”

McKinney said he plans to run for reelection in November. Steve Olsen was chosen as mayor pro tempore.
