KING CASE AFTERMATH: A CITY IN CRISIS : Judge Permits Jails to Take Any Rioters

Share

Superior Court Judge James A. Malkus on Friday lifted a court order that limited crowding at county jails, in order that any people arrested over the weekend for rioting, looting or civil disturbances can be jailed.

Malkus’ order, which expires at 4 p.m. Sunday, is designed to help police agencies deal with any local disturbances stemming from the recent not-guilty verdicts for four white Los Angeles police officers charged with beating black motorist Rodney King.

The jury verdict spawned rioting and looting in Los Angeles and other U.S. cities.

Malkus’ order was requested by Sheriff Jim Roache, who said he will ask for an extension of the directive if weekend events warrant.
