IRVINE : Student Carrying Knife at School Held

Share

A 14-year-old student was arrested at University High School on Friday for allegedly bringing a spring-loaded knife on campus, police said.

School officials searched the boy after other students told them that he had been carrying the knife on campus earlier in the week, Irvine Police Sgt. Gary Shull said.

The knife taken from the boy works like a switchblade, with the blade springing from the handle at the push of a button, Shull said.

He said he did not know why the boy brought the knife to campus. School Principal Leah Laule could not be reached Friday afternoon.

Weapons brought to school are an occasional problem for the schools and police, Shull said. “You’ve got to remember what kids at 14 do,” he said. “They try to show their masculinity.”
