Gold Medalist Buck Says He’s Considering Retiring

Craig Buck, who helped the United States to two consecutive Olympic gold medals in volleyball, said he is considering retirement.

Buck, 33, told U.S. national team coach Fred Sturm on Tuesday that he wanted to leave the team, but Sturm suggested he think about it through the weekend. They are scheduled to meet Monday.

“The door’s open,” Buck said Thursday. “It’s my decision. I’m not being forced out. I’m old. I’ve done it and there are some young guys who can do it just as well, so let’s watch them play. I’m sad, but I think the team has a good chance of winning the gold. My lifelong dream was to win three, though.”

Buck, the oldest player on the team, was competing at the squad’s most competitive position, middle blocker, against Bryan Ivie, Bob Samuelson and Doug Partie.
