Hart’s Niccum Listed in Good Condition

Casey Niccum, a junior outfielder for Hart High, was listed in good condition Wednesday after he was critically injured in an automobile accident Tuesday morning.

Niccum, 17, remains hospitalized at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia where he was taken by ambulance after the car he was driving collided with another vehicle near Hart’s campus in Newhall.

Niccum sustained a fractured kidney and abdominal trauma, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

American Legion District 20 will begin play May 30 with 30 teams, the largest field in district history, Commissioner Mel Swerdling said.

The district will contain four divisions, delineated by geographical region. Each team will play 23 games.

The district playoffs will be held July 21-26 at Birmingham High and Pierce College. The 6th Area playoffs will be held July 30-Aug. 2 at UCLA’s Jackie Robinson Stadium.

In the past three summers, District 20 has produced a World Series champion (1989) and a state champion (1990).

The Cleveland High tennis courts will be dedicated in memory of former Coach Arnie Leckman prior to a football fund-raiser at the school June 12.

The ceremony will take place before a 7 p.m. basketball game between Cleveland faculty and alumni and members of the Los Angeles Raiders. Leckman died last June, shortly after his retirement from Cleveland.

Former Cleveland basketball standout Adonis Jordan, now the starting point guard at Kansas, is expected to participate.

Tryouts will be conducted Saturday at Chaminade High for the West Hills American Legion baseball team.

To be eligible, players must not turn 19 before Aug. 1 and they must bring a birth certificate. Tryouts will begin at 9 a.m.
