Anteaters in 12th After First Round of Golf Regional
UC Irvine was in 12th place after the opening round of the NCAA West Regional Men’s golf tournament at Tucson, Ariz., their first NCAA Division I postseason golf competition.
The top nine teams and two individuals advance to the NCAA championship at Albuquerque, N.M. The Anteaters are at five-over-par 293, 13 shots behind leading San Jose State and two behind University of San Francisco, which is in ninth.
Lyle Archer was Irvine’s top performer, shooting a two-under-par 70, tying him for 10th place, four behind co-leaders Todd Demsey of Arizona State and Todd Fischer of USF. Phil Mickelson of Arizona State, the 1989 and 1990 NCAA champion who won the PGA Tour’s Northern Telecom Open in 1991, was tied for third, one shot back.
The three-round tournament continues today.
