Birmingham Site of City Baseball Semifinal

The City Section 4-A Division baseball semifinal game between Chatsworth and Poly highs is set for Monday at 3 p.m. at Birmingham High.

Chatsworth, the West Valley League co-champion, is 17-10 and has won 11 of its past 12 games. Poly, the East Valley League champion and the top-seeded team in the division, has won 14 games in a row to improve to 20-4.

In the other Monday semifinal, second-seeded University (24-3) will face San Pedro (20-4) at UCLA’s Jackie Robinson Stadium at 3 p.m.

The final will be played Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium at 7:30.

Chatsworth last won the 4-A title in 1990. Poly has not won a City baseball title, falling in the 1978 and 1987 finals.

The University-San Pedro winner will be seeking to end at 19 San Fernando Valley teams’ streak of consecutive major-division championships.

Chris Brown of Rialto Eisenhower High, Cherice Ellison of San Jose Mt. Pleasant and Lori Miller of Bakersfield North have signed letters of intent with the Cal State Northridge track and field program.

Brown placed third in the 400-meter dash in the 4-A Division in last week’s Southern Section championships at Cerritos College. He entered Friday night’s Southern Section Masters meet at Cerritos with a personal best of 48.41 seconds in the event.

Ellison won Central Coast Section titles in the girls’ 100, 200 and long jump Thursday. She has run an 11.72 (wind-aided) in the 100, 24.89 in the 200 and has a best of 18 feet 5 inches in the long jump.

Miller, who qualified for last year’s girls’ state meet in the 800 and 1,600, has personal bests of 2 minutes 14.31 seconds in the 800, 5:02.38 in the 1,600, and 11:15.16 in the 3,200.

Froylan Sanchez, a distance runner from St. Francis High, has committed to UC Santa Barbara.

Sanchez placed fourth at 3,200 meters in the Southern Section 1-A Division track finals and was seventh in the state Division III cross-country meet in November.

Chris Hopkins of Harvard-Westlake has committed to play men’s volleyball at California.

Hopkins, a 5-foot-11 senior setter, led Harvard to a 17-5 record and the Southern Section 3-A Division semifinals this season.
