BASEBALL SIGNINGS : Titan Moler Commits to Phillies; Naulty, Sisco Also Sign

Cal State Fullerton catcher Jason Moler, an Esperanza High School graduate, has signed a contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, but will not report to the organization until he has completed his commitment with the U.S. Olympic team.

Moler, a fourth-round draft pick, is one of 33 finalists for Team U.S.A., which is holding tryouts at Millington, Tenn.

He hit .363 with eight home runs, 27 doubles and 62 runs batted in this season to help Fullerton reach the College World Series championship game, where the Titans lost to Pepperdine, 3-2.

Titan pitcher Dan Naulty and second baseman Steve Sisco also signed professional contracts.

Naulty, a 14th-round pick of the Minnesota Twins, has reported to the team’s mini-camp in Florida. The Ocean View High graduate was 13-4 with a 3.59 earned-run average and 95 strikeouts.

Sisco, a 16th-round pick of the Kansas City Royals, has reported to the team’s short-season, Class-A affiliate in Eugene, Ore. He hit .321 with 23 doubles and 57 RBIs.

Former Cypress College and El Toro High School standout Sean Drinkwater signed with the San Diego Padres, Cypress Coach Scott Pickler said. Drinkwater was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference shortstop at North Carolina State this spring. He will report to the Padres’ Class-A team in Spokane, Wash., this week. Drinkwater is the seventh player on Cypress’ 1991 State championship team to sign a professional contract.

Former Laguna Beach High School shortstop Danny Lane of UC Santa Barbara has signed with the Montreal Expos and will report to the Jamestown Expos of the Class-A New York-Penn League. Lane was a three-year starter for UCSB and was invited to the U.S. Olympic team tryouts last year. Lane was drafted in the 24th round and signed by Expo scout Ron Walters.

Vista High School’s Aaron Rounsifer, an 11th-round selection by the Boston Red Sox, signed with the American League club for a $75,000 bonus.

Rounsifer, who batted .488 and signed a national letter of intent to play at Cal State Fullerton, made his decision Wednesday after meeting with Boston scout Ray Boone.
